Applicious

There is one apple left. Wow that's a lot of cooking. Four cans of apple butter a bunch of apple sauce. Apple Muffins to share with our friends at the play date on Friday.
Today I made the Apple-Peanut Butter-Caramel Bars I think the name says it all. And to show that apples aren't just for sweets I show you the Delicata stuffed with Curried Apples and Couscous. You see apples have range. They can be anything or in anything you want. yum.

Happy New Year!

Onward

Like I was saying. With all that casting off there is some fabulous casting on. But when is casting on not fabulous? The excitement of something new.

Four count them four things on the needles. And all get knit on regularly. Really.

The top left corner that green thing. A hand towel for the bathroom that seems to be the most knit for person, place or thing in the house. It has a neat stitch pattern that you can't see here. It looks like the Star of David. I saw it in Knitting Nature on a sweater. Didn't like the sweater so I'm using it on a hand towel.

Next is the Kaylee sock I said I wanted to make months ago. The patter was finally available. Bright enough for you?

Then the Evangeline fingerless gloves I'm doing the elbow length version. Again cool cabling that can't be seen. There are individual pictures on my Ravelry but I didn't want to do a picture heavy of a post.

Finally the biggy. The piece I'm rather excited about and has been on my mind all summer. It's a blanket. I've had that yarn forever, never knowing what to do with it. I saw the Snapping Turtle Skirt pattern in Knitting Nature (apparently I like the ideas in this book but not the patterns), liked it but would never wear a knit skirt. Then it came to me. This blue variegated yarn would look like water in that pattern. So then... perhaps instead of a skirt a blanket. Cover myself in the ocean. It's working about how I expected. I just hope it still looks cool when I'm done.

I think you know that I knit on everything I have going. I don't seem like the sort who never finishes things. It might take a while. But there is a knit for every mood or situation. You just never know what you will feel like knitting when you get those precious few minutes while you child cuts a whole in the screen window.

You can't see me....

As I may have mentioned in the past Mr. Gnome works in the theater world. On the technical side. Thus he wears a bit of black. You can't see the people back stage or on stage if they are wearing black you see. Or don't see.... Anyway. Naturally when I decided to make him socks I made him black socks. He wore them today to show his boss, a new recruit to the knitting world.

Lovely picture, complete with hairy leg. This is Panda Silk a merino/bamboo/silk combo of yarn. Oh so fun to knit. Knit cuff down in a basket weave pattern, simple enough for a man yet interesting enough for knitting. Socks are my go anywhere project. I found the black doesn't go anywhere. If the light is just a bit dim you really can't see what you are doing.

With all this stuff coming off the needles I'm sure you are asking, "What is going onto the needles? For surely she can't just sit there with nothing to knit." Tis true; I can't. But that is a post for another day.

Apple Picking

Saturday we went apple picking with some friends. The Bug was very excited to go fruit picking with her friends. Apparently fruit picking with just her parents isn't Nearly as much fun.

As always we just got a few things.... yeay right. You see back in the day when we lived on our own farms and grew our own stuff we canned or dried what we weren't going to eat right then. Now with technology we have the freezer too. Thus I froze the fruits before and with these apples I will make jars of apple butter (frozen apples don't seem like such a good idea). Better than getting it from South America in a few months.

I'm of course making yummy things for the right now too. Already made an Apple Crisp. Mmm it was very basic (I didn't have the oats to make the more "crunchy" version) but Very yummy. Just plain eating them is great too . I have more apple plans that involve a peanut butter-caramel. I think that's all that needs to be said about that.

Finally!!

I found a curtain rod for the bathroom curtain. Remember? I can't believe that post was from June. Sad. Buttons don't even take this long. Though don't ask about the button's for my nephew's sweater. It's pretty cool now that it's up. Mr. Gnome noticed it right away. Just when you think they arn't paying attention to anything. It lets in just enough light and that light is a slight shade of green.

Fun close up.

Bubbly Curtain from Mason-Dixon Knitting. I saw some pictures from their new book. I must say, I'm intrigued.

knitting knitting everywhere

I have started the Holiday knitting. Lucky for you, or not, depending on how you really feel, the first holiday knit is for a non-blog reader. He doesn't read the blog because he's my baby nephew; can't read.

Cardigan, minus buttons. The pattern is from The Knitter's Book of Yarn. The yarn is Rhapsody Dark Horse. This was a crazy fast knit, size 6 month and knit up on size 9 needles. yeay, fast. Simple, but interesting.
There may not be too many holiday knits that I can blog about. Except Dishcloth Extravaganza 2008. The Extravaganza will be less extravagant this year. We aren't visiting Vermont this year so there are no relatives we only talk to at such gatherings to give gifts to. Thus fewer dishcloths. Though it should still be a good month of me knitting just dishcloths and that is always fun to watch.
To change the subject completely. When I first started this blog I was thinking I'd talk about the books we get from the library; when it's a good one. But it just hasn't happened. I made a promise to myself at the beginning of the summer that the Bug and I would walk to the library once a week. We did. Every week we'd pick a nice day when it wouldn't be too hot or rainy and we went to the library. I loved the excuse to walk. I like to walk but I like it have a purpose. The Bug loves the library. The husband even came a few times and picked out books. This will of course continue into the fall with story time. Just now I won't be able to go a different day if it's raining. Anyhow. I found a book this past week. The Surprise by Sylvia van Ommen. Intrigued by the sheep on the scooter I picked it up. It's so cute. No words so the Bug is free to tell me the story. The sheep on the cover gets some dye, dies his wool, shaves himself and brings the wool to this poodle. Crazy pink spinning poodle. I find it amusing that she is smoking others, I'm sure, will find it horrible. She's like the crazy old blue haired lady who stays active and still after all these years smokes. I'm sure she has a husky voice and horrible teeth. Quite the character.
Then the sheep winds his wool and knits and knits and knits. I love how the yawn; been there my friend, been there. I won't tell you what he makes or for who. That would ruin the surprise.

Dizzy up the house

Round and round it goes. The rug is finished. This was the project that would not end. From getting the fabric, to cutting it up, to sewing it together, to the endless garter. That may sound like complaining but it really isn't. It was fun in it's way. I'm glad I wasn't too anxious for the rug, then it might not have been as much fun. Cutting the fabric into strips was surprisingly soothing. Considering I'm not a sewer this is surprising. Sewing the fabric wasn't even all that bad. It took a long time mostly because I just wouldn't sit down for too long to sew. The knitting while just being boring garter wasn't made more fun by seeing the fabrics work together. Making the fabric face the right way also kept me paying attention. It liked to twist and it didn't always twist in a nice cooperative way that made the outside of the fabric face out. And here it is in it's new home in the home. I've wanted a rag rug for under this chair for a long time. It's good to have a place to sit when the dizzy takes over you.

Good bye to summer

It's September. The weather is cooling down. Our activities are starting up again. This summer seemed to go very fast. Maybe it was because it wasn't as hot. Maybe it was because we did so much with the kid. Maybe it was that month Mr. Gnome had off. I don't' know. This fall we are doing gymnastics and story time on top of our usual meetings and play dates.

At our local kiddie pool. So glad that sign was there. Very informative. Also a good thing to know. Very specific.

What would we do without these poolside signs?

No need to imagine

It might have been too scary for you; I understand.
The Psychedelic Medieval Socks are finished. Crazy, fabulous, Love it! Complete with little ties. Why? I don't really know, but I think they are cool.

The weather cooled off just as I was finishing them. Now that they are finished I hear it's supposed to warm up again. Soon my pretties, soon it will be cold enough for knee high wool socks. On a personal achievement note I kitchenered the second one while watching TV. I've always needed complete silence to kitchener before. Thus is the awesomeness of these socks.

Quesadillas

Mr. Gnome has gone back to work. It's been a few weeks but the first week was a normal person's 9-5. Last week and for the next month it is every day and almost every night. I think he has a day off in Oct. On the nights when he is not home I don't really make dinner. Nothing interesting or involved at least. The Bug is still at the stage where she will only eat a handful of things. And heaven forbid should they be touching.

One of my not really cooking dinners is quesadillas. Which for me is just frozen corn and spinach with cheese and salsa on a tortilla, maybe with some yogurt. Satisfying and easy and rather cheap really. Sometimes I'll through in beans or other veggies depending on what we have.

The Little Bug likes tortillas, she likes cheese, and she likes frozen peas. I cook my frozen veggies she still likes the frozen. She put hers together like this the other night, thought about eating it, then her three-year-old self took over and she took it apart.
Simplicity.
